Mohawk District Committee on Lay Speaking Sponsors

Weekend Retreat at Aldersgate

Mohawk District Superintendent, Rev. Sung Ho Lee, will lead a retreat entitled, "The Present Future – Six Tough Questions for the Church."

Reggie McNeals says, "The current church culture in North America is on life support." If he is right, and I think he is, it will not change the church’s direction if we only do harder what we’ve been doing. McNeals claims that we must start with right questions, instead of working on wrong questions. What are the wrong questions? What are the right questions? In this retreat, participants will have the opportunity to see if your church is asking the right questions that must be answered for reshaping the church. Rev. Lee will lead lay speakers in reframing questions for the church and in seeing the reality from a new perspective, which will redirect the journey of faith and ministry. Participants may take this course for Advance Lay Speaking credit or are welcome to audit the course.

Prior to the retreat participants will need to read the Book of Acts and Reggie McNeals book, The Present Future-Six Tough questions for the Church."

The retreat will begin with dinner on Friday, April 9th and conclude following lunch on Sunday, April 11th. The cost is $121 and includes accommodations in C-cabins, materials and meals. Handicapped accessible rooms are available upon request. Books will be mailed upon receipt of registration. The registration deadline is March 16th, 2010.

Objective

Help local churches to improve the basic activities of the church and strengthen evangelism

What You Get from This Program

This program is different from other programs that offer only knowledge and information: “Here is something that you can do. This will help you to grow your church. Have fun. Bye now.” And that’s the end. Local churches, with excitement, try to do something out of it, but without much success. Why? They have learned what to do from the program, but they don’t know how to do it and nobody helps.

In this program, the leader team will help local churches to grow by: (1) teaching what to do and how to do it (but this is not the end of teaching), (2) coaching and counseling provided by program leaders afterward when implementing what you have learned, and (3) learning and working together with partner churches.

Program

Eight learning sessions for two years

1. Spring 2009 Understanding of Ministry and development of mission and vision

Saturday, March 14, 9am-4pm, location-TBA

2. Spring 2009 Radical Hospitality

Saturday, June 6, 9am-4pm, location-TBA

3. Fall 2009 Passionate Worship, date & location-TBA

4. Fall 2009 Intentional Faith Development, date & location-TBA

5. Spring 2010 Risk-taking Mission and Service, date & location-TBA

6. Spring 2010 Extravagant Generosity, date & location-TBA

7. Fall 2010 Needs-Based Evangelism, date & location-TBA

8. Fall 2010 Evaluation/Assessment/Planning, date & location-TBA

Each session includes:

Preparation for the learning session – Devotion and study

One-day learning session – learning and planning

Implementation – Implementation of plans with ongoing coaching from the leader team and mutual sharing with a partner church

Local Church Team

Only 10 churches will be admitted to this program. Each local church sends a team of six people, pastor and 5 lay people, to the program. The local church team must attend all sessions. Each local church is encouraged to bring other church members who provide leadership in, or who have passion for, the ministry area of each session.

Covenant relationship with accountability

It is not one-day program. It is a corporate journey for two years. It requires commitment, faithfulness and accountability to each other among participants and program leaders. It demands hard work for implementation and practice of learning. This program is not for the churches that only wish to grow without commitment and passion. This program is for the churches that are passionate about and committed to growth.

Application Fee

$175/year for church team for teaching material and lunch.

It is only $7.50/session/person.

Suggestions: Encourage your congregation to Special monthly offering - $15/month

The Grove Cafe

The Grove Cafe is a Christian Coffeehouse that is open on the third Friday of each month. We have been open since July, 2007. Located in the First United Methodist Church (Mohawk District) of Oneida, NY at 116 W Grove St. (The corner of Main and Grove)

We have hosted bands and singers such as: One Foot Forward, The Project, Christopher Ames, Kevin Thompson, Barry Russo, Mike Peling, Justin Elwell, Jesse Orton and Mason Summers. We have a great line up for this year so far: True Witness, Marvin and Gentry, Jim and Laura Byrd, and Shawn Thomas from Aaron's Rainbow Project. We want to provide a safe and friendly environment for families of all ages to be able to hang out and have some fun. Each month is a different and exciting genre of acceptable music for all ages. The admission is free, love offerings are encouraged and refreshments are available.  Kevin Thompson will be appearing April 18th.

The Grove would like to announce our upcoming fundraiser event/festival: The T.I.N. Fest (Teens In Need) being held June 21, 2008-11 a.m. - 5 p.m. A variety of Christian Hip-Hop artists are performing along with youth ministers and other fun activities for teens and children. This event is a fundraiser for the Teen Programs with Liberty Resources.(such as TASA-The Teenage Services Act, STOP-Stop Teen Pregnancy and RHY-Runaway and Homeless Youth Program) The idea is to inform teens and young families about the various programs that are available to them as well as the fact that Christian music can be more than just church hymns.

Artists already booked for this event (but subject to change): Universal Soldier from Syracuse, Gospel City from NYC, Demonslayer from PA, The Lyrical Miracle from Chicago and Ebenez. Various businesses/restaurants will be onsite to offer their products. Liberty Resources will be there to offer more information about their services and there will be different activities for the kids to participate in.

Watch for more information as the date gets closer or you can log onto www.myspace.com/thegrovecafe for more information.
