Practical CEO

Have you heard of “practical atheists”? Practical atheists are the ones who believe in God but their faith in God is not shown in their deeds. A practical atheist is the one who would acknowledge the existence of God but who lives as though there were no God. God makes no practical difference in his/her life. He/She may go to church even, but in real life, there is no God so far as he/she is concerned.

The Rev. Dr. Robert J. McCracken, who was the minister of the Riverside Church, New York, once said, “In restaurants and shops I heard the Christmas carols, and looked at the people round about me, and recalled Bishop John A.T. Robinson’s dictum, ‘Most of us today are practical atheists.’”

Looking at empty pews as I continue my journey in Lent, from “Ashes” to “New Life” (Yes, ashes will be transformed into a new life!), I recall what Bishop Robinson said. Those pews will be filled again on Easter Sunday by the CEOs (Christmas and Easter Only).

But what really concerns me is practical CEOs who quite regularly go to church and are actively involved in the church life, but neither experience the God of Immanuel (God present in me) and the new life of Easter nor live them out.

Practical atheists and practical CEOs believe in God and only a part of their lives is related to God.

How about disciples? Disciples are the ones whose lives are transformed.

The power of Easter resurrection is the power to even transform ashes to new life: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17, NRSV)

We are neither practical atheists nor practical CEOs. We are the Disciples of Christ, the ones who are transformed by the power of love of Christ who rose from the dead.

Easter people experience resurrection every day in everything they do.

An Easter church brings forth new life and brings it to its community to resurrect it.

 Christ is risen! Alleluia!
